A DUMA TAU DAY

We were up at 5:30 and on our first drive of the day by 6:30. Today, we took a route that led to the beginning of the Savute Channel. We searched for lion and leopard but to no avail. Birding was quite quiet and we added only a few new birds to our lists. We added another mammal - this time a Slender Mongoose. We saw elephant, giraffe, hippos, different antelope species, wart hogs, and two honey badgers. We could see them very well as they were not partially hidden in tall grass. They bounce rather than walk. We also had a good look at a beautiful male steenbok. Are they ever tiny compared to their cousins.

We drove back to the camp and freshened up for our barge lunch. It was very special floating gently down the Linyanti River being served by our own personal chef. The meal was absolutely delicious and we went back for seconds and thirds. The loaf of homemade bread had a filling of hot chilli peppers. We demolished the loaf. It was delightfully cooler on the river. We were enjoying ourselves so much, we forgot to bird! We did notice two elephants play fighting in deep water - they kept trying to submerge each other. We also saw hippo bodies partly out of the water not just their heads. We really noticed the heat once we landed.

We came back to my room to do our lists. We introduced Glen to the joys of the kikoi and I gave him the extra one from my room. We are meeting him for a bird walk around the camp at 5:15 before leaving for our night drive at 6:00. Dinner tonight is supposed to be at the fire pit dock. Hope so.

We noticed at tea and pee time that Rogers was drinking a different concoction. I asked what he had and he said it was a fresh lemon and ginger drink that could be served hot or cold. We asked to have some to take with us on our morning drive tomorrow as it is supposed to be good when you have a cold and sore throat. I still have mine but so far it hasn't kept me from enjoying myself.
