ANOTHER TRAVEL DAY
After checking out our spacious room, Norma changed into her bathing suit and ducked into our private plunge pool. Although it was cold, the sun was warm and it didn't take long for her to warm up. She talked me into trying it as well so we ended up relaxing in the sun until we were to meet Glen for a late afternoon birding walk. While we were outside, I showed Norma her very first African bird - a Scarlet-breasted Sunbird. It is a beautiful bird with a curved beak and an scarlet iridescent breast and a green iridescent throat.
Our late afternoon walk around the suburb in which our hotel is located was very productive providing us with good views of many Namibian endemics, some of which are quite rare.
On our return, we decided on an early dinner - which was delicious, so that we could get to bed early.
We were in bed by nine o'clock and in three minutes were both asleep. I woke up twice during the night but by two am was back in dreamland. Luckily we had arranged a wake-up call for 6:30 as we were both sleeping soundly when it came. After another delicious meal, we set out walking to the Botanical Gardens. We were almost there when we were stopped by a local who told us that we were entering a high-crime area and shouldn't venture any further. Caution reigned and we returned to the hotel for a taxi. On the way we saw a pair of Crimson-breasted Shrikes - gorgeous birds along with some other rare endemics. At the Botanical Garden, we encountered many other rare endemic species found only in Namibia including a Rockrunner- a bird that is on the 'want list' of serious birders. Even Glen was surprised to see it there. It has a beautiful song and serenaded us for several minutes.
After this productive morning, we taxied back to the hotel for lunch - a delicious smoked salmon, artichoke and cucumber salad for me. We are now waiting in the Wilderness Safari Lounge waiting for our small plane to take us to Little Kulala Camp. We plan a walk-about when we get there to add more birds to our lists. Our luggage is very under-weight so we packed well and are good to go.
