BIRD AND ELEPHANT OBSERVATIONS

In my opinion, it is the birds that add mostly to the sounds we hear. Some calls are hauntingly beautiful, others are faint. Some songs are melodic - others raucous. Most of the time the birds go about their business quietly foraging but if something upsets them, it is amazing how loud they can be.

We saw many, many herds of elephants yesterday. Apparently there are too many of them. They are destroying the habitat not only for themselves but for other birds and animals. Nothing stands in their way - they uproot trees, break branches, kill large trees by rubbing themselves on the bark until there is none left and the tree dies. South Africa has tried culling them but unless they destroy the entire herd, the ones left become psychotic and go rogue. Using birth control or spaying and neutering are extremely expensive and difficult. No one has come up with a solution to the problem. Glen said that the elephants have turned Chobe National Park into a virtual desert.
