BOAT TRIP ON THE OKAVANGO DELTA
We left around 4:30 to drive to the dock that services another Wilderness Safari Camp near here (but not nearly as luxurious as this one), Little Vumbura, which is situated on an island in the Delta. This ride was one of the most adventuresome yet. At times the deeply rutted road completely disappeared into the water. At one point, it appeared we were driving through a huge lake. How G found his way through it remains a mystery. Once there, we hopped onto a 'dugout' and started off with a brief stop at Little Vumbura Camp for a bathroom break. The trip down the river was glorious, smooth and birdy. As the sun was about to set, we had our Sundowner on the river, Hendrick's Gin all around. We were on the main channel which runs all the way to Maun and takes about a day to get there. No one is allowed on the river after sundown so we headed back to our vehicle for the ride home. This turned out to be the night-drive part of our afternoon. My one worry was how on earth we were ever going to find our way back through the lake without sinking. Somehow we managed it. We saw a nightjar but not too much else. We freshened up before dinner and on our way along the boardwalk spotted another Genet.
Dinner was delicious once again. How they manage to produce such excellent meals with fresh ingredients out here in the wilderness, I'll never know. Our salads always are garnished by a snapdragon or two. Back in our room, we enjoyed an Amarula before heading for dreamland and another 5:30 wake-up call.
