OUR FIRST NIGHT IN THE KALAHARI DESERT

OUR FIRST NIGHT IN THE KALAHARI DESERT

Our flight to Maun was uneventful and we were met by Winderness Safari personnel and directed to our small plane for our flight to Kalahari Plains Camp. Our driver/guide here is TK. It was about a 40-minute drive to the camp and blisteringly hot. We arrived at the small camp (eight tents) and were greeted by song by some of the camp staff. We were introduced to everyone by name each of us struggling to pronounce the other's. A delicious tea was being served and once again, we were fed. It seems that every few hours there is something to eat. We were shown to our room - quite basic considering what we left, but we have the best room for viewing the wildlife at the waterhole. All the water in the taps is saline except for the cold water tap in the sinks. There were only two species of vultures to look at last night.

We met Glen at the Sundowner at 6:30 for a drink and sunset watching. It was a glorious sunset. The camp staff had a huge bonfire going - surprising to me as it was still very warm. We enjoyed our dinner before retiring to our rooftop, outdoor bedroom to sleep under the stars. We slept until 1:00 am when the temperature got too cold! I am sure there is more than a 30 degree Celsius difference in the temperature from night to day. We then retired to our inside beds. We had to spray the room because there were ants on the toilet tank and a huge spider inside our mosquito netting. In spite of that we slept until our wakeup call at 5:30.
