AFTERNOON BOAT RIDE AND NIGHT DRIVE We thoroughly enjoyed our boat ride. The air is so much cooler on the river. Rogers treated us to some thrilling moments as he opened up the motor and let loose. We had our Sundowners at a spot on the river where two elephants were slowly crossing almost completely submerged at points, eating as they went. The sun was setting behind them - it was a magical sight. As one got closer to our boat, he let loose with a loud trumpet just to let us know that he was there (as if we could miss him - my eyesight isn't that bad yet!) and not to get any closer. Nothing stands in their way - they uproot trees, break branches, kill large trees by rubbing themselves on the bark until there is none left and the tree dies. South Africa has tried culling them but unless they destroy the entire herd, the ones left become psychotic and go rogue. Using birth control or spaying and neutering are extremely expensive and difficult. No one has come up with a solution to the problem. Glen said that the elephants have turned Chobe National Park in...
